What is the purpose of User Groups?

This article explains the purpose of User Groups within AGD Connect.

When setting up AGD Connect for the first time, administrators are given the ability to create and assign User Groups.

User Groups are a collection of individuals within a Highways Authority or Sub Contractor that require group-level access. They are the mechanism by which a Highways Authority grants permission to a sub-contractor to assign ownership of devices to Highways Authorities and configure AGD devices on their network.

What if I am not in a User Group?

Without access to a permitted group, a Sub-Contractor engineer is unable to complete the installation and configuration process for AGD devices.

Can Highways Authorities see who is in the User Group?

No, to protect the identity of individuals between organisations, User Groups are away of granting individual access without comprimising privacy and is designed in accordance with GDPR.

Who needs to create User Groups?

It is most important for Sub-Contractors to create User Groups, as without these they will be unable to complete the configuration process, which could delay commissioning. Highways Authorities can also create User Groups, and it may be necessary for them to do so if resource is shared across Authorities, e.g. a Highways Authority engineer in Sheffield also performs work on behalf of Rotherham.

What if my User Group has not been granted access by a Highways Authority?

You will need to ensure the Highways Authority is on-boarded with AGD Connect, and request that they grant your relevant User Group access to their Authority.

Please contact AGD Systems if the Highways Authority is not set up with AGD Connect.

How many User Groups should I create?

This depends on how you would like to manage your Users, and how much control your Highways Authorities require of access to their network.

It may suit businesses operating in smaller areas with less engineers to have one User Group with everyone in it, but large national Sub-Contractors may wish to organise their teams by function, i.e. Installation and Commissioning, or by depot/region, i.e. South and North.

Please ensure whichever name you assign to your User Group can be clearly understood by 3rd parties, as this should aid the Highways Authority in deciding which User Groups should have access to their network.

What if I change Sub-Contractors?

If you change Sub-Contractors, you may need to return to your Access List page to grant or remove access to the relevant User Groups. We would encourage Highways Authorities to regularly check the Access List page to ensure it is up to date, and that only those who are allowed to make changes to AGD detector configuration have access via the Access List and permitted User Groups.
