How to install and set up an AGD340 radar

Correct power, alignment, sensitivity and direction settings are essential to reliable AGD340 speed measurement.

 Safety and certification

Installation and adjustment must be completed by trained personnel under the applicable enforcement approval and calibration procedure. The source manual requires the radar to be certified every 12 months. Changing installation or detection parameters may affect measurement accuracy or certification.

Do not power the radar from a vehicle supply while the engine is running. The radar has a short high-current demand during startup, so use a suitable regulated supply.

Set the mounting angle

The radar is normally configured for a defined angle across the road, commonly 22 degrees. Check the value marked on the radar and read it with the *AD command. The configured angle provides cosine correction. A configured angle that is lower than the physical mounting angle causes the reported speed to be high; a configured angle that is higher causes it to be low.

Typical use

Reason

Low

Up to two lanes

Reduces unwanted detections from weak reflections especially in urban locations

High

Three or four lanes

Improves detection of small targets in more distant lanes

Avoid pointing the radar towards large flat surfaces, especially metal surfaces, because they can reflect the transmitted signal and create false detections.

Check direction and operation

  1. Set the required approaching receding or dual direction mode.

  2. In dual direction use, design the camera trigger so a target on the far side is captured from the beam-entry message and a near-side target from the beam-exit message.

  3. Run the approved self-test and confirm that no fault is reported.

  4. Verify the installation with the approved traceable roadside process before enforcement use.
